The Crown Jewel: Abu Simbel Temples Private Day Trip

Deep in the heart of the Nubian Desert, near the border of Sudan, lies the most ambitious architectural project of the New Kingdom. The Crown Jewel: Abu Simbel Temples, carved directly into a sandstone mountain, serves as a timeless testament to the ego and love of Ramses the Great. This is more than a tour; it is a pilgrimage to one of the most significant archaeological salvage operations in human history.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

The Pre-Dawn Sahara Crossing Your journey begins with an early morning pickup (usually around 4:00 AM) from your Aswan hotel or cruise. While the hour is early, it allows you to cross the Sahara Desert as the sky transitions from deep indigo to fiery orange. Watching the sunrise over the vast, empty desert landscape is a quiet, spiritual highlight for many travelers.

Arrival at the Edge of Lake Nasser Upon arrival at the site (approx. a 3-hour drive), you will catch your first glimpse of the massive Great Temple. Your private Egyptologist guide will explain the layout of the complex, which was precisely engineered so that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach deep into the sanctuary to illuminate the statues of the gods.

The Great Temple of Ramses II As you step inside, you’ll walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall, flanked by eight pillars carved in the likeness of Osiris. The walls are decorated with vibrant reliefs of the Battle of Kadesh. Your guide will decode the hieroglyphs that tell the story of Ramses' military prowess and his relationship with the gods Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah.

The Temple of Nefertari A short walk away lies the smaller, but equally exquisite, temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. The intimacy and detail of the carvings here offer a softer contrast to the masculine grandeur of the Great Temple.

Return to Aswan After approximately 2 hours of exploration and plenty of time for photography, we begin the drive back to Aswan. You’ll arrive back at your accommodation in the early afternoon, leaving you time to relax by the Nile for the rest of the day.
